A Historic New England Sanctuary

Our History

Rooted in Faith. Renewed by Grace.

The Carmel Union Congregational Church stands as the oldest organized church in Carmel, Maine - a congregation whose story stretches back to the earliest days of the town's settlement in the early nineteenth century.

In those formative years, the Christians of Carmel gathered as a union meeting house, drawing together believers of Baptist and broader Protestant convictions who shared a common love for Scripture and a desire to worship together on the frontier of a young nation. That spirit of earnest, Word-centered fellowship was the foundation upon which this congregation was built.

Over the generations, the church has weathered the changes that come to every living institution - seasons of growth and quiet, of challenge and renewal. Yet through it all, the congregation has remained anchored to the same convictions that stirred its earliest members: the authority of Holy Scripture, the centrality of Jesus Christ, and the gathered worship of God's people.

In recent years, the church has experienced a joyful recovery of its historic congregational roots - a tradition stretching back to the Protestant Reformation and the fires of the Great Awakening, when men and women were gripped anew by the sovereign grace of God and the sufficiency of His Word.

This season of renewal has been shaped in no small part by the ministry of Rev. Dr. Jacob A. Clement, D.Min., whose doctoral studies in church revitalization have informed a thoughtful, grace-driven approach to leading a congregation forward. Under his leadership, Carmel Union Congregational Church is being renewed in its love for God's Word and its commitment to Christ-centered biblical exposition - preaching that opens the Scriptures plainly, faithfully, and with pastoral care for souls.

We are, in many ways, a church rediscovering who she has always been - a people called together by the grace of God, shaped by His Word, and sent into the world in the name of Jesus Christ.

What We Believe

Ancient Truths. Living Faith.

The Holy Scriptures

We believe the Bible - the sixty-six books of the Old and New Testaments - is the inspired, infallible, and fully sufficient Word of God. Scripture alone is the final authority for what we believe and how we live. (2 Timothy 3:16-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21)

The Triune God

We believe in one God, eternally existing in three Persons - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - equal in nature, distinct in Person, and united in purpose. He is holy, sovereign, and worthy of all worship. (Matthew 28:19; Deuteronomy 6:4)

Jesus Christ

We believe in the full deity and full humanity of Jesus Christ - born of a virgin, sinless in life, crucifixional in death, and bodily raised from the dead. He is the only Savior of sinners, the reigning Lord of His church, and the coming King of all creation. (John 1:1, 14; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4)

The Gospel

We believe that all people are sinners by nature and by choice, and stand in need of God's saving grace. Salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone - not by human effort or merit. God justifies the ungodly freely, for the sake of Christ, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 2:8-9; Romans 3:23-24)

The Holy Spirit

We believe the Holy Spirit indwells every true believer, bearing witness to Christ, illuminating Scripture, producing the fruit of godliness, and empowering the church for worship, witness, and service. (John 16:13; Galatians 5:22-23)

The Church

We stand in the congregational tradition - believing that the local church is a covenant community of believers, gathered under the lordship of Christ and the authority of Scripture, responsible together for its worship, witness, and governance. We hold in deep respect the legacy of the Reformation and the Great Awakening, and the faithful saints who carried these convictions before us. (Matthew 18:20; Acts 2:42-47)

The Last Things

We believe in the personal, visible, and glorious return of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the final judgment. Those who have trusted in Christ will be received into eternal life in His presence; those who have not will face eternal separation from God. (John 14:3; Revelation 20:11-15)

These convictions do not belong to us alone - they are the faith once for all delivered to the saints, treasured by the church across the centuries, and held out to every generation as life-giving truth.

A Word from Pastor Clement

Dear Friend,

Whether you have wandered into this page out of curiosity, or you are searching for a church home, or you have simply heard something about what God is doing among us here in Carmel - I am glad you are here. Welcome.

Carmel Union Congregational Church is not a perfect church. No such church exists this side of eternity. What you will find here is a company of ordinary people who have been laid hold of by an extraordinary Savior - people who are learning, week by week, to love God more deeply, to trust His Word more fully, and to love one another more faithfully.

We take the Bible seriously. Not because we are trying to be impressive or old-fashioned, but because we are genuinely convinced that Scripture is the living voice of God - and that when it is opened, read, and faithfully preached, something happens that no program or personality can manufacture. Lives change. Hope rises. Grace does its quiet, powerful work.

We are a congregational church - which means we govern ourselves under the lordship of Christ, with no bishop or denominational hierarchy standing over us. We are connected to the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches (NACCC). That is not a point of pride; it is a posture of accountability. We answer first and finally to Jesus Christ and to the Word He has given us.

I have given years of study to the question of how churches - particularly older, smaller churches - can be genuinely renewed rather than simply rebranded. What I have come to believe, with deep conviction, is this: the path forward is almost always the path backward - back to the Word, back to prayer, back to the Gospel, back to one another. That is the work we are pursuing here, by the grace of God.

If you are nearby, I warmly invite you to join us on a Sunday morning. Come as you are. Bring your questions. Bring your doubts. Bring your family. You will be welcomed at the door, and we trust you will find - as so many have - that the ancient Gospel of Jesus Christ is as alive and powerful today as it has ever been.

In Christ Alone,

Rev. Dr. Jacob A. Clement, D.Min., P-BCC
Pastor, Carmel Union Congregational Church
Carmel, Maine

Historic Roots

Standing since 1825

For nearly two centuries, our white clapboard chapel has served as a spiritual anchor in Carmel. Built by local hands, this sanctuary continues to bridge generations through shared worship and neighborly care.

We honor our deep Maine heritage not as a monument to the past, but as a living room where people encounter the Living Christ and learn to live as the favorite sons and daughters of the heavenly Father, brought back into a right relationship with Him through our Elder Brother, Jesus.

Core Covenant

Faith in action

Simple Christian love

Neighbor-led ministry

Active local outreach

We focus on Christ-centered preaching and teaching the life-changing gospel, which sends us out on mission in God's kingdom, intentionally stepping over rigid dogmatic barriers to welcome every seeker.

We are a gathering of people whose hearts are being changed as we grow together in our understanding of how God's kingdom is unlike any other kingdom of this world.

The gospel sends us out on mission into our neighborhoods, towns, counties, and the world. As we go, we encounter fresh opportunities for repentance and renewal, recognizing our need for the same grace we offer to others.

A Welcoming Crossroads

Our leadership is shared among local neighbors, but our pastor is always available to listen, pray, or share a warm conversation.
